CLUBS
CLOSE UP - sponsor, Mr. Mulso
This club increases awareness in the political process
by visiting Washington DC for a week. Participants
learn about our government first hand by interacting
with political figures and students from across
the US. The members are Juniors and Seniors recommended
by social studies teachers.
DECA - sponsor, Mrs.
Davis
Is a club sponsored by the Business Education Department
as part of its curricular program. Membership is
limited to students in the Distributive Education
class. This group undertakes many projects that
benefit the school and the community.
DIVERSITY CLUB -
sponsors, Ms. Dipert & Mr. Gilleran
Students explore diversity issues through activities
including volunteer and service projects.
DRAMA - plays & musicals:
Gives aspiring actors a chance to test their skills
in one or more of the plays and musicals staged
at North each year.
FUTURE TEACHERS CLUB -
sponsor, Mrs. Torigian
encourages students to seek careers in teaching. Members discuss the
qualifications which make good teachers, visit classroom teachers in specialized
areas, and investigate specific college degree programs. Students have an
opportunity to volunteer to work with children as tutors, in the after-school
child care programs in the elementary schools, and in the Special Olympics.
JAZZ, PEP BAND & ORCHESTRA
- sponsor, Mr. Cleveland
provide many opportunities for instrumental music students to participate and
perform in a variety of events throughout the year.
HARBINGER - sponsor, Mr.
Young
Harbinger is Grosse Pointe North’s literary
journal. It is published annually as a collection of
original student and faculty literary and artistic work.
Students involved in the staff of Harbinger take
responsibility for the format, content selection, design
layout and presentation, publicity, and distribution of
the journal. Harbinger meets weekly and publishes
at the end of the school year.
IMPACT CLUB - sponsors,
Ms. Davenport & Ms. Skelly
This is
a community service organization that does a monthly
service project. We meet the third Thursday of the month
for a short time and have a monthly project. There
is a different project each month. Projects are planned in June for the following year. MUSICAL ACTIVITIES:
In addition to the drama and instrumental groups
available to North students, there are also special
vocal groups, such as Pointe Chorale (16 mixed voices),
Girls' Ensemble, and Men's Ensemble. Each year the
music department presents a major musical play (Grease,
Annie, Sound of Music, etc.) which
is open to all students.
NATIONAL ART HONOR SOCIETY
- sponsor, Mr. Theis
NAHS is a service and social organization here at North
that tries to increase awareness of the arts in school
and community. Field trips to museums and collections
are planned and funded through club fundraising efforts.
Criteria for membership are to maintain a 3.0 grade
point average in the art classes, and participate in
meetings, fundraising and other club activities. Current
and past art students are welcome.
NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY -
sponsor, Mrs. Pierce
The North High School Chapter of the National Honor Society was granted a
charter and organized in 1969. To be considered for membership, Juniors
and Seniors must have a cumulative GPA of 3.25. Election to membership
by the faculty will be based upon service, character, and leadership in a manner
consistent with the national constitution of the National Honor Society
QUIZ BOWL - sponsor, Mr. Hicks
This activity provides interested
students with the opportunity to participate in the
Macomb Area Quiz Bowl League of 15 high schools in "Jeopardy"
style competition from October through May. The team
also participates in regional tournaments on weekends
and the state championship competition sponsored by
McDonalds.
R.A.T.S.
(RADIO ASTRONOMY TEAM) - sponsor, Mrs.
Herrold
The RATS are a group of North and South High School
students whose focus is on astronomy and other earth
science related activities. Open to all students,
the club's primary activity is the operation of
the student-built radio telescope at North High
School. Members also do astronomy and earth
science field trips, night observing, research projects,
tours, and education programs.
ROBOTICS TEAM:
The Robotics Team is a
combined North and South team sponsored by South
teacher, Ken Ginger. It is for any student, freshmen
through senior, who is interested in designing,
building, and programming a robot, as well as students
interested in business and marketing. They meet all
year, but the intense build and marketing portion is
daily January through March. We usually compete twice. S.A.D.D.
(Students Against Drunk Driving)
As an integrated part of the State of Michigan's
SADD\MADD chapters, this program provides community
and school awareness of the dangers of drinking
and driving. Educational programs provide
a heightened awareness for "Youth At Risk."
Membership is open to North Students.
VALKYRIES - sponsor, Ms.
C. Clay
Students in Valkyries serve the school community
as ushers for school sponsored functions. You will
see the work of these students seating and greeting
people during plays. You may see them giving you
a program or serving refreshments at school events.
This service organization consists of Sophomores,
Juniors, and Seniors. The group also sponsors a
child through the World Vision program.
WILLOW - sponsors,
Mrs. Murray, Ms. Gast, Ms. Muto, Mrs. Roman.
WILLOW is an organization that is open to all
Women of North and sponsors monthly meetings on
topics that pertain to high school girls, such as
women's self defense, healthy eating and exercise.
It sponsors a speaker panel of professional women as
well as fun activities such as Chick Flick in
the PAC and a Willow Pillow Party. WILLOW
also does community service through the Alternatives
for Girls organization. A mentoring program is at
the core of WILLOW. Junior girls are paired
with freshman girls and seniors with sophomores. If
