ATHLETICS IS AN EXTENSION OF THE CLASSROOM
PARTICIPATING ON AN ATHLETIC TEAM IS AN OPPORTUNITY, NOT A RIGHT!
ATTENTION PARENTS:
ACADEMIC ELIGIBILITY
To be deemed eligible for athletic participation during the season of a sport,
the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) requires that
student-athletes earned at least 20 credit hours the previous semester and are
passing at least 20 credit hours the present semester. The Grosse Pointe
Public School System, as a member of MHSAA, abides by this eligibility standard.
Parents ~ If you are concerned about
your child's academic progress, the Athletic Department can help you get
her/him on the right track!
Please call Carmen Kennedy, assistant
principal/athletic director, for more information about the Academic Progress
Track.
This service can be used by ALL parents,
regardless if your child is eligible or ineligible. We work with teachers,
counselors and coaches to make sure your student is academically prepared for
the classroom.

North Athletics,
A
Tradition of Excellence
|
As an integral part of a community (Grosse
Pointe Woods, MI) that prides itself on a
commitment to excellence, the athletic program
at
Grosse Pointe
North High
School is a reflection of that desire to bring
out the best in our students, parents, school,
and community. The mission of Grosse Pointe
North Athletics is, with the support of the
community, to offer a program in educational
athletics that provides opportunities for
student growth and development through
competitive interscholastic sports.
Since Grosse
Pointe North High School opened in the fall
of 1968, interscholastic athletics have been an
integral part of the school, and school system
that prides itself on excellence in academics,
athletics, and the performing arts. North is a
member of the thirty-two school Macomb Area
Conference (MAC), which places member schools in
divisions for each sport based on size of the
school and the strength of the program. Despite
being one of the smallest of the Class “A” high
schools in the conference, North and it’s sister
school South compete in the highest division of
the MAC (the Red Division) in more sports than
any other conference member(s). We are proud of
a tradition of competitive success that includes
over 300 conference championships, over 100
Conference Meet Champions, more than 50 MHSAA
district championships, over 80 MHSAA Regional
Championships, 8 state runner-up teams, 9 state
champion teams, and several individual state
champions (including the 2001-2002 Michigan
Female Athlete of the Year). In
2002
the Varsity Boys’ Ice Hockey Team took home a
second consecutive MHSAA State Championship.
And in 2005, the Varsity Boys Basketball team
advanced to the Final Four at Breslin Arena.
Academically, North is consistently at the top
of the state in MHSAA Scholar Athlete nominees,
and we are fortunate to have had 5
student-athletes recognized as the MHSAA Scholar
Athlete of the Year for their sport. The
emphasis on academics at North is highlighted by
the fact that year, in and year out, more than
70% of the 800+ individual students who
participate in athletics at North earn a GPA of
3.0 or above.
Inclusion is also a critical component of the
Grosse Pointe philosophy towards extracurricular
activities, as evidenced by the Detroit News
ranking Grosse Pointe North and South among the
State’s top schools for gender equity in
athletics. North offers thirty-one
different sports programs in which a
student-athlete may earn a Varsity letter,
seventeen of which are female teams, twelve of
which are male teams, and two of which are
co-educational. North offers a Varsity team in
every MHSAA sponsored sport except skiing, and
in addition, has Varsity programs in boys’
and girls’ crew, boys’ and girls’ sailing,
dance, girls’ ice hockey, and girls’ field
hockey. At Grosse Pointe North, there is
definitely a wide variety of opportunity for
student involvement.
Grosse Pointe North and
Grosse Pointe
Public Schools,
are committed to excellence, and to educational
athletics. We have a district wide Athletic
Steering Committee, comprised of parents, staff,
administrators, and coaches who guide the
athletic programs through budgeting, expansion,
long range projects, and policy. The
commitment of our district, the breadth of our
programs, the standards of competitive
excellence, and the proven academic and athletic
success of our student-athletes has made Grosse
Pointe North an exemplary athletic program.
Nearly two/thirds of our
student body participate on one of our
interscholastic athletic teams or clubs. It's a
great way for students to have fun, develop new
and lasting friendships, and experiences with
students from other school districts. According
to recent student surveys, the number one reason
students want to play sports for their school -
"It's fun"!!

Pointe North High School offers the following

High School Athletic Participation Fees for 2007-2008
Due to the reduction in
the district athletic budget by $400,000 over the past
two years, it has become necessary to charge a
participation fee of $115 per athlete, per sport for
those students wishing to participate in high school
athletics. This fee allows us to maintain the scope of
programs we provide, allowing students to have a wide
variety of opportunities for involvement in activities
beyond the school day. Payment of the fee is required
for participation.
Make checks
payable to Grosse Pointe North. Checks will be
collected by coaches. Students paying in cash should
pay at the athletic office and will receive a receipt.
Students/Parents with concerns over the ability to pay
this fee should contact the Athletic Director.
